Quick Linux Bit. Apt-get rocks
Not really Linux gaming specific, but I recently swapped out hard drives on my "new old" machine. Now, I don't tend to download a whole ton of extra stuff. Kubuntu has a pretty solid set of default applications, but there's always a few bits out there. I like VLC, I kind of prefer Kopete over the default IM application, and there's always some other little bits and pieces.
Instead of trying to hunt down little pieces of software from 14 different websites, you can simply throw one big fat apt-get install blah blah blah command into a console, hit enter and voila, it fetches all the things you want.
Wait for everything to install and download, and you're done. Pain free and with a minimum of hassle. If you have a "preferred" list of applications outside what comes in your debian-based distribution (I am unfamiliar with non Debian based package managers, so substitute as appropriate), it's worth saving this in your email or similar online storage, so if you need to restore a system, or do a new install, you don't have to poke around looking for these things by hand.
As an aside, I am still looking for contributors. If you enjoy gaming on Linux, and want to review games, let me know, and I'll bring you on board.
