Quick Linux bit: Conserving processing power
If you are operating on a fairly limited system, full blown desktop environments like KDE or Gnome can eat into precious, limited computing power. It might be in interest to have a basic, stripped down desktop environment to use on occasion, particularly when running something more demanding. Kubuntu comes with OpenBox which is about as stripped as they get, but there's plenty of other options out there.
