This one probably doesn't need much introduction, but what if 8 bit "faux retro" aliens invaded Earth, made a mess of things and we decided to build gun turrets to stop them?
The answer would pretty much be Revenge of the Titans from Puppy Games.
Revenge is pretty much a mixture of tower defense and real time strategy: You build gun turrets, with various power ups to boost them, set up defensive perimeters, try to predict the enemies approach, then you run out of money and they eat your base. Maybe that's just me playing it though. In between, you're activating power ups, clicking on things that pop up, researching better weapons between missions and generally trying to survive a lengthy and brutal campaign.
This is one of those games that you wouldn't expect to be as good as it is, but once you play, it draws you in, at least for a while.
